Norfolk Southern (NS) became a Finger Lakes Railway (FGLK) service partner when it began operation of their acquired portion of Conrail on June 1, 1999. NS and FGLK interchange cars at Geneva, NY.
NS routes cars to and from FGLK through its Gang Mills Yard at Corning, NY. NS is continuing to work on its Northeast network to improve service for customers. In 2002, NS performed a significant restructuring of its service plan including major improvements on the Southern Tier and Corning Secondary, which is the connecting track between Corning, NY and FGLK at Geneva, NY. This service redesign increased the efficiency of its operations and offered better value to customers.
In addition to direct NS service, NS also provides “Bridge” connections with 10 other local Shortline Partners. This initiative is called THE EMPIRE LINK.
